Training Event horses and developing riders into successful partnerships at all levels.

Welcome to Landmark Eventing!

We were founded and are led by Becky Roper. Becky competed successfully in Eventing through Advanced and the FEI CCI4*-S level with her heart horse Jireh (aka Sisco). Sisco is an OTTB Becky started as a 4-year-old and produced to the top levels of the sport. Many horses have shaped Becky’s riding and approach to training.  Many students have influenced Becky’s teaching and strategies to coaching.

Becky trains extensively with Mary D’Arcy O’Connell and has ridden in many clinics, which have included legends such as Anne Kursinski, Bernie Traurig, Greg Best, Julie Winkle, Karen O’Connor, Blyth Tait, Jimmy Wofford, Phillip Dutton and William Fox Pitt.

Becky started Landmark Eventing in 2001 and is currently located at the beautiful Sergeant Ranch in Pilot Point, TX. She continues to train, compete and coach at all local venues throughout Area 5 and North Texas. Becky has produced many horses, adult amateurs, and young riders to the FEI level.

Becky was certified through the USEA’s Eventing Coaches Program in 2004, one year after the program started at the grass roots level. Her focus is to produce riders and horses that are happy and comfortable in their work together, regardless of the level. Becky incorporates a wholistic approach to event training and management which includes proper nutrition, veterinary and farrier care, body work and saddle fit.

Becky Roper, Founder & Head Trainer

I grew up as an Army brat and the youngest of four kids. My dad graduated from West Point in 1958 and was a decorated Army officer for 30 years, having served in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. So, to say I have a heart for those who serve our country in the armed forces is an understatement. I lived all over the US and in Heidelberg, Germany!

When we moved back to the states, I started riding at Flora Lee Farms in Medford, NJ with Kathy Makin. I rode so many different horses early in my riding career at this wonderful riding school.

We then moved to Ft Bragg, NC and I immediately got involved in the Shady Lane Pony Club at the Ft Bragg Riding Stables. We found a 4-year-old backyard Thoroughbred gelding and he was my high school horse that I produced through pony club rallies and two USPC championships. Brian Ross was working on his judges license at the time and would drive up from Southern Pines and give our pony club lessons. Penny Ross organized the Ft Bragg Horse Trials that we started in 1987 and it ran through 2002.

I rode for Shelby French at St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, NC on the IHSA and ANRC teams, riding as a freshman in the 1989 ANRC championships. I finished my time in Pony Club completing my H-A rating in 1989.

I took a break from riding for a couple years in college to experience other things. In 1991, I spent a semester abroad in Beijing, China! After college, I worked at Landmark Farm in Southern Pines, NC, home at the time to Mr. Firestone (Bridgestone Tires)! I worked for Sue Buckley taking care of this private farm and rode in the Moore County Hunt on the beautiful Walthour Moss Foundation during the 1992/93 season. I continued to ride on and off for fun, competing here and there into my early twenties and riding for different owners.

I married John Roper in 1994. During my on and off riding time, I attended Campbell University, received my MEd in education and taught 6th and 7th grade for a short stint. We then moved to Plano, TX in 1999 and adopted our son, Joshua, in 2006!

In 2004, after producing several horses to successful levels here locally, I ventured out on a decade-long dream. I purchased my heart horse who showed me what true courage felt like under saddle. I have never sat on such bravery and heart before Sisco (registered name, Jireh). He was a lanky and gangly 4-year-old off the track thoroughbred, but I’d never looked a horse in the eye and seen so much soul. I am forever indebted to Sisco for establishing my career in the upper levels of our sport. He is happily retired at my dear friend’s ranch, being absolutely spoiled and loved by so many people.

So, here I am in Texas, running a full time training business having realized that horses are a life long pursuit and the passion never quite leaves you once you’re gripped. I am forever grateful to my patient husband who has kept me encouraged during the ups and downs, my mom who shuttled me back and forth to lessons and the barn and who was always there to support the cause, and to my loyal client base which has become a second family. I hold true to my Christian faith, which influences my decisions and business interactions. I extend grace to all just as I have experienced it, and encourage one another to be kind and to have courage. I hope to give back to the horses and riders, just as much as others in the past helped me, so we can all enjoy the journey whether for pleasure or sport.
